The first AI ever created was a child of the Industrial Revolution. Made in 1808 — of all mechanical parts — it was based on a variation of the technology behind the Jacquard loom. It required instructions to be fed in via punchcard, and a human “computer” to act as operator. Her name was Agnes.

Industrialists soon realized they could use this device to track and predict the meta-patterns on their production lines, and at the factory level. With time and experience, they were also able to predict worker uprisings, and suppress them before they even started. This technology spread rapidly, as did the professional guild of all-female human computers who acted as operators.
